ABC Kitchen, Flatiron District

Well known as being another Jean Georges Vongerichten restaurant, ABC Kitchen certainly lives up to the JG reputation and hype. This NYC hot spot commits to serving fresh and local ingredients in a laid back yet extravagantly beautiful space. Their menu changes regularly to offer only the best seasonal items. So if you’re in the mood for some healthy, fresh, farm-to-table fare, you’ll love it!

This restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside (I could hardly find it) but once you walk through the door, it’s like plunging into another world. The decor is superb! Open now for three years, this place is still so popular that you will probably have to wait at least an hour to get a table during rush hours, and reservations are not much easier! The restaurant has become such a success that JG opened its spin-off Latin cousin, ABC Coccina, just this year.

ABC Kitchen is what I would call a quintessential ‘Sex & the City’ spot. It’s got a cool, sexy vibe, and attracts an equally attractive crowd of people in their late 20′s/early 30′s. (I didn’t spot any grandmas like I did at Le Perigord, if you know what I mean!) The atmosphere is vibrant. Go for it and you’ll definitely be ‘in the scene’. It’s a perfect spot for large groups, and some of the dishes are even meant to be shared by the table, but because of the large open layout, I would not suggest going there for an intimate dining experience.

Here was our food rundown:

abc-kitchen-nyc-crab-toastThe crab toast with lemon aioli – I loved this little healthy combination! The seasoning was perfect and all the bites super fresh. It was a bit too small for the price though… I expected a larger portion.

abc-kitchen-nyc-avocado-saladThe roast carrot and avocado salad with crunchy seed, sour cream and citron. This was a nice kick of flavors. We loved the way the carrots were cooked; it was very flavourful!

abc-kitchen-nyc-pizza-mushroomsThe mushrooms, parmesan, oregano and farm egg pizza. Delicious! Very tasty and definitely big enough to satisfy your hunger.

The + + +

The ambiance: great decor and nice background music

The food was high quality and extremely fresh. Having it locally sourced makes it even better!

Great drinks

The – – –

Very pricey. Especially the crab toast. $16 for a piece of bread with some toppings is… a bit ridiculous?

The wait was long (45 minutes)

The service could have been better: the server was kind of rushing us out. I mean, he tried hard….But it didn’t really work 🙂

They don’t have knives that cut well. I HAD to mention that.  It’s like a pen that doesn’t write. It drives me nuts.

You may enjoy some shopping in their next door store ‘ABC Carpet & Home’ after your meal. They have some really cool home decor stuff like this beautiful photo frame I found!

If you’re more into cerebral activities, you can go to Union Square and find some chess buddies!
